Officials in San Bernardino and Riverside counties plan to move
voting almost entirely to paper ballots to ensure compliance with
state standards in February.
The effort will be completed at "substantial" cost, said Kari
Verjil, San Bernardino County registrar of voters.
When Secretary of State Debra Bowen announced new restrictions on
electronic voting machines last weekend, the two counties were hit
particularly hard - all of their machines were deemed unusable.
Election officials in the counties are now preparing to overhaul
their voting systems in time for February's primary election, the
first contest that will be affected by Bowen's decision to decertify
the machines.
