But now the property boom sweeping the North-east has hit rental properties.

And one landlord is offering his home to the highest bidder.

Traditionally, properties for rent are on the market at a fixed price.

But Chris Rigby, 32, is asking people to pay in excess of pounds900 for 15 North Square, Footdee, a two bedroom cottage.

And he wants to "get as much for the property as possible".

"I don't want to put the cottage on the market too cheap, so instead I am offering prospective tenants the chance to bid for a lease," he said.

"If tenants really want it they are going to have to pay for it."
