Article: Be worldly wise about making gap-year trips

A Student adviser and a young entrepreneur from Bath have joined the debate on rip-off gap-year placements.

Earlier this month, Britain's leading international development charity issued a warning to all school leavers thinking of volunteering abroad.

Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) voiced concerns that many companies organising gap-year projects overcharge students and do little to help developing countries.

Bath resident Lawrence Lockhart, who runs fairs offering advice to students about gap-year placements, said doing research about the schemes on offer was key.

He said students were often overwhelmed by the choice of gap-year opportunities.
