The disruption caused by the outbreak of the Second World War
dominated Gwen Foster's childhood memories. For not only was she
briefly and unhappily evacuated, but later her whole family had a
narrow escape when their house was damaged in a bombing raid,
rendering them homeless - as Gwen (nee Wheldon), of Littleover,
recounts.
School life and the impact of the Second World War are among my
earliest memories.
I began my school life in 1935, before war broke out, at St James'
Road Infants' School, aged four.
Three years later, I moved up to St James' Road Junior School,
which was a school only for girls.
The junior boys were separated out into a different building
