The new president and CEO of Eddie Bauer promised Thursday to return the struggling retailer to its roots: selling apparel for the great outdoors.

Fabian Mansson, a 38-year-old Swedish-born whiz kid who produced double-digit sales growth at Europe's Hennes & Mauritz retail chain, started his new job Thursday facing enormous challenges, not only at Eddie Bauer but at its financially ailing parent, Downers Grove- based Spiegel Group.

The top job at Eddie Bauer had been vacant since early January, when 52-year-old Rick Fersh abruptly retired.
