Article: Firefighters say smoke alarm saved lives after fire broke out in house

Firefighters today said a smoke alarm probably averted tragedy after a blaze tore through a city home.

Five people escaped uninjured from the fire at a house in Maple Road, St Thomas.

One of the group was forced to jump from a first floor window of the property after fire broke out shortly before 7am yesterday.

Firefighters said a smoke alarm had alerted the occupants to the blaze at the end-of-terrace property, made up of two flats and three bedsits.

One person was treated at the scene for cuts and bruises and two were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.
