Alistair Darling, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, has
announced that this Labour Government intend to go ahead with the
closure of up to 2,000 post offices, more than 100 in the South West.
Local MPs, both Lib Dem and Conservative are up in arms, even going
as far as to suggest "a people's revolt".
The Labour Government, and our Conservative and Lib Dem MPs, who
must know, will not admit the real reason why Post Offices are to be
closed, which is EU diktat.
In 1997 the incoming Labour Government signed the Treaty of
Amsterdam which in article 88 requires a British Government to ask
permission from the EU Commission to "state aid" the postal services.
