Poor old Jack the donkey has become too doddery on his feet to cart a giant apple pie through Marldon village tomorrow.

The popular animal has been a fixture of the Marldon Apple Pie Fair for donkey's years - 15 to be precise.

Now, at the ripe old age of 34, Jack will not take the traditional route from Ye Olde Smokey House, down through the village and to the field.

But the pet will still make a star appearance at Jubilee Meadow, where he will transport the giant apple pie some 150 yards from the entrance to the stage.

Then Dominic Acland, director of Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, will cut the pie and declare the event officially open at 2pm.
