How many agents does it take to sell real estate?
These days, close to a million.
With every segment of the economy except housing faltering in the
past three years, the number of real estate agents has risen beyond
anyone's expectations.
There are 962,000 dues-paying members of the National Association
of Realtors, an increase of more than 200,000 in those three years.
The size of the increase has confounded those in the industry who
held that technology, which gives people greater access to
information once controlled by real estate agents and brokers, would
have the opposite effect.
John Tuccillo, former chief economist for the realty association,
has long expected a shakeout.
