Dear Dr. Fox:
I have a 10-year-old, 115-pound German shepherd dog. My
veterinarian has prescribed him an arthritis medication that costs
$75 for a one-month supply. Would it be harmful to give him
nonprescription medication for people, such as Tylenol or Aleve, for
his arthritis?

One human dose of Tylenol, buffered aspirin or Aleve given daily
after your dog has eaten should help his arthritis. Gentle, regular
exercise, a soft bed to lie on, and massage treatment on a regular
basis will also ease his pain. Finally, a tablespoon of the spice
turmeric mixed in with his food, in a meatball treat or put into a
gelatin capsule, will also be beneficial.
