CHAMPAIGN--They were blue, all right, blue with shame. Next time
the Bears opt for a full-scale fashion makeover, they should consider
the laughingstock quotient across the country. Nothing is worse than
a sports team that tries to make a major statement and ends up laying
an ugly egg.
So goes the concept that the Bears are a big-time team worthy of
prime-time TV. What was more painful Monday night, a battered defense
that was stuck in Urbana while Brett Favre, as brilliant as we've
seen him, threw to receivers wide-open in Champaign? Or an offense
that was woefully unprepared to match the Green Bay onslaught, not
turning up an erratic passing game until it was much too late? For
