Red wines from Washington state often rest in the shadow of those
from the Napa Valley and other parts of California.
But when Washington's reds are really on target, you can find some
of the most intense red wines the West Coast has to offer.
The growing areas in Washington are at the same parallel as
Bordeaux. The wine-growing areas of Washington state are more arid
than California, providing some excellent places to grow grapes.
Most of the vineyards are in the eastern part of the state, so
winds from the west are blocked by the Cascade Mountains. That makes
the climate in eastern Washington the warmest for growing grapes in
the Pacific Northwest.
