Sexual crimes against children are a problem in Buchanan County,
which is evident in the number of cases filed in the 5th Judicial
Circuit each year.
"The vast majority of the sex cases we do involve kids," said
Dwight Scroggins, Buchanan County prosecutor. "Sexual assault is a
kid issue."
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, children under
the age of 12 comprise about 44 percent of the victims of crimes like
sexual assault, on a national level. However, in family situations,
children represent 62 percent of all victims.
Mr. Scroggins said on a local level that about 85 percent of
sexual assault cases involve a child victim.
