Article: Controversial play 'The Vagina Monologues' makes its St. Joseph debut

Vagina isn't a word that usually pops up in everyday conversation. Or in newspaper articles, for that matter.

So, Lauren Spencer understands how a play dealing with women's personal experiences with their bodies might make some people squeamish. But as the director of a new production of Eve Ensler's controversial play "The Vagina Monologues" - which will have performances at Missouri Western State College at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday, Feb. 14 - Spencer believes the play has much more to offer than shock value.

"Some (monologues) are humorous, some are really serious, and some are tragic. But they're not pitying, or hurt or wounded," she says. "They're women who've overcome what's happened ...
