And now - (drum roll please) - they're also a symbol of power, independence and class.

That's the marketing campaign, anyway.

"Your left hand says, 'we,' your right hand says 'me,'" goes the ads for The Diamond Trading Company, the rough diamond sales arm of De Beers. "Your left hand rocks the cradle, your right hand rules the world."

Women of the world, they say, raise your right hand.

But first, buy a nice rock.
