The Buchanan County Jail housed Brad Hughes six times in the past
three years. No visit was worse than his two stays this year, he
says.
His complaints are common among former inmates. He says inmates
spend days curled up in an overcrowded cell and jail guards ridicule
inmates.
The 21-year-old has been in and out of jail since he was 18. The
last time he was arrested, earlier this year, he spent five days in
the jail.
"I was in a cell with 16 people for days. You couldn't move," Mr.
Hughes said. "The overcrowding is just crazy. They'll bring four
girls in and put them in a one-girl cell."
Buchanan County Sheriff Mike Strong says the problems of the jail
are no secret, but are not as bad ...
