Article: Free on the sea: 'Freestyle cruising' loosens up floating vacations

WHEN Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Star sailed out of Honolulu on Dec. 16, it marked more than the beginning of a new series of weekly cruises in Hawaii.

NCL has inaugurated a whole new style of cruising. The line calls it "freestyle cruising," and it has already shaken up seagoing traditions and prompted other lines to rethink how they serve their passengers.

The line has been introducing freestyle cruising into its fleet one by one since about a year ago, but its two newest ships - the Norwegian Sun and the Norwegian Star, both christened in Miami in December - are the first specially designed for the concept.
