United's talks with unions focus on launching low-cost carrier

Concession talks this week between bankrupt UAL Corp.'s United Airlines and its machinists union focused on the airline's interest in forming a low-cost carrier and how that might impact workers, according to the union.

Meanwhile, United said Thursday it plans to lay off 704 flight attendants Feb. 22, which would bring the number of laid-off flight attendants at the airline to roughly 4,210, according to the Association of Flight Attendants.

The carrier, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, said the flight attendant layoffs are the result of flight reductions and service changes that affect staffing needs.
