Article: Quarter a beauty for Alberto-Culver Profit rises 23 percent for hair-care and personal care products company

Alberto-Culver Co. said its profit climbed 23 percent for the quarter ended Dec. 31, as the company sold more hair-care goods to salons and consumers snapped up competitively priced personal care products.

The Melrose Park company, which makes Alberto V05 shampoo and St. Ives lotions, said its first-quarter profit rose to $36 million, or 60 cents per diluted share, from $29.3 million, or 50 cents per diluted share, during the same period a year ago.

The company's sales climbed 13 percent to $696.8 million for the quarter, and grew 7.1 percent excluding acquisitions it made in the previous year.
