A licensed real estate appraiser put the value of a vacant Watt
Powell Park site at $4,346,000 during an April inspection, less than
the city's asking price of $5 million.
The sale of Watt Powell, the city's home for minor league baseball
since 1949, is a crucial aspect of Charleston's financing of a new
park. Certified general appraiser Gene Zdrojewski appraised the park
April 17.
His findings are included in a 350-page application the city
submitted to a state economic development committee last week. City
officials have asked the state for $12 million to aid in ballpark
construction, up from an originally discussed figure of $10 million.
