A Charleston landmark for over 60 years and one of the most remarkable public buildings in West Virginia, the Charleston Municipal Auditorium was built as a project of the Federal Works Progress Administration and dedicated in 1939 - about the time of this photo.

With 3,800 seats, it is one of - if not the - largest auditoriums in a 150-mile radius. If you know of a bigger one, let me know.

Often referred to as an art-deco design, it is more correctly what was called art moderne and is quite unique.
