Q. I am enclosing a picture of a stuffed toy dog that I received
as a child approximately 40 to 50 years ago. The dog is made by
Steiff and has the metal button and tag still in one ear. Can you
give me some information on the dog and its approximate value? -

A. Over the years, the German company Margarete Steiff GmbH has
produced a multitude of stuffed animals, all of them collected.
The firm is named for its founder, Apollonia Margarete Steiff
(1847-1909). Born in Giengen, Germany, Steiff contracted polio as a
child and was confined to a wheelchair. She became an expert
seamstress and, by the late 1870s, had gone into the felt business,
