WASHINGTON - In the world of white chocolate aficionados, the United States is behind the times.

Belgium, Switzerland and some other countries that flaunt the quality of their chocolates have had government standards for years for labeling the creamy white sweet as white chocolate.

The United States has no such written standard, although the Food and Drug Administration does require candymakers to get special temporary 15-month permits to label their confections as white chocolate.
