Outdoor rooms
The idea of creating outdoor living spaces is nothing new, but
garden designer Jamie Durie puts a fresh look on the concept in his
new book "The Outdoor Room" (Allen & Unwin, $29.95).
Durie, host of the Australian garden-makeover show "Backyard
Blitz," shares some of the unconventional ideas he's developed in his
six years as owner of a landscaping business. His modern designs
incorporate uncommon elements such as curved steel walls, cane
sculptures and a creek that seems to have cut through a broken
section of pavement.
Durie's philosophy is that outdoor rooms shouldn't be merely
practical, but also places to connect with nature and nurture our
