Considering the mess they were facing the day after the 2002
season, Colorado Rockies executives had a pretty good winter.
Ownership's surprise decision to eat $34 million of Mike Hampton's
contract gave general manager Dan O'Dowd just enough financial
maneuverability to add power to the lineup, athleticism to the
outfield and dependability to the bullpen.
Because baseball might have no greater advantage than last bats at
Coors Field, the Rockies should always win at least 45 games at home.
They averaged 44 home wins the last two years with an offense that
was far too reliant on Larry Walker and Todd Helton.
For 2003, the Rockies' Opening Day lineup could have Walker and
