As Thorney Lieberman unscrewed the knurled brass cap of an
aluminum fly-rod tube, he opened a tiny circular window into history.
He pulled out a poplin bag, lovingly hand-sewn more than half a
century ago. From the bag he pulled a long, golden-brown fishing rod,
hexagonal in cross-section and oddly devoid of identifying marks.
"This is a Payne," he said, naming the rod's maker, Jim Payne of
New York. "I have several of his rods. I also have a few Thomas &
Thomas rods, and I have one each by H.L. ...
