Bacteria hang out at California beach

HUNTINGTON STATE BEACH, Calif. - Like a weak but persistent heartbeat, the two bacterial hotspots pulse with a regular rhythm, turning up in the surf roughly every two weeks.

Strongest at certain tide levels and when the moon is new or full, these hotspots, a few thousand feet apart on Huntington State Beach, often require the posting of warnings to swimmers.

And they remain one of Orange County's most stubborn environmental mysteries.

A Stanford scientist is now digging into the matter, hoping to prove that the cause of the contamination lies in the shallow groundwater beneath the sand.
