NUTTALLBURG - In 1817, John Nuttall was born in England, and by
age 11, he was working in a coal mine. Nuttall's father died when
Nuttall was only 3. The family struggled with poverty, but he
promised himself he would someday seek his fortune in America.
From England, he arrived in Pennsylvania with his family. But on
his first trip to Fayette County, W.Va., he stared into a tavern fire
at what he realized was a high grade of coal. When he asked about the
coal, he learned that it was from a four-foot-thick coal seam that
ran through the mountains where a new railroad line would soon be
built.
Nuttall started buying up land as fast as possible for $1 an acre.
