CHANGE isn't always good. Take the case of West Virginia's new
commerce-friendly "Open for Business" slogan, now appearing on all
114 state "welcome" signs at major highway border crossings.
A petition drive to replace the new buzzwords with the traditional
"Wild, Wonderful" slogan has garnered nearly 20,000 signatures in
less than three weeks.
Gov. Manchin's slogan change, designed to attract new jobs to the
state, comes across to many as being too desperate or tacky, simply
not as good as "Wild and Wonderful," or as trite as the "Certified
Business Location" signs posted along every county line road crossing
in West Virginia.
