TONY Soprano didn't die at the end. Neither did Richard Nixon, but Macbeth did.

Which raises the question: Why do we care; what is the source of our fascination with men who do evil things? It is not the evil they do that draws us to them.

We were shocked in the final episode of "The Sopranos" when Phil Leotardo was shot dead - with his wife and grandchildren watching. Millions winced and turned away at the crunching sound as his SUV rolled over his head.

We knew who ordered the execution. But we forgave Tony. There was a kind of just equivalence in the revolting scene, because Phil had ordered the elimination of Tony - with extreme prejudice.
