MY mother's rolling pin came into being in the early 1920s when my
uncle carved it out of a gum tree on the old home place in West
Virginia. He presented it to his sister on her wedding day.
The rolling pin was unique in that it was all one piece and hand-
carved. There was a slight hump in the roller, which was so slight it
was almost unnoticeable. The surface of the roller was as smooth as a
baby's backside.
I became acquainted with the rolling pin when I was very young,
watching my mother roll out pie and cookie dough while the kitchen
smelled of cinnamon and apples. As the years went by, I watched and
learned the art of baking.
