Humberside Police have defended a rise in spending on hiring foreign language interpreters as a sound investment in their fight against crime.

Last year the cost to local taxpayers was more than pounds320,000, an increase of more than pounds16,000 on 2005/06.

The spending has come under fire from the Conservative Party, which wants some of the money redirected to providing English language lessons for immigrants.

The party's immigration spokesman, Damian Green, said: "This use of resources is yet another reason why it is important for people to learn English before they come here."
