Former Westland owner GKN is in advanced talks on investing in Filton along with Spirit of the US

Engineering group GKN and US aircraft parts maker Spirit Aerosystems have emerged as front runners to partner Airbus in a new pioneering West factory.

The two are engaged in talks with the European planemaker to fund the pounds100 million centre at its giant Filton site to the north of Bristol which will produce next-generation composite wings for future Airbus aircraft.

Other companies have also expressed interest in adopting this risk- sharing role, the exact terms of which are still being hammered out by Airbus.
