The fire which swept through the Cutty Sark very nearly destroyed
an icon of British maritime heritage. And no-one mourns the loss more
than Matthew Tanner, director of the ss Great Britain Trust
Few who woke up to images on the news yesterday morning of the
Cutty Sark on fire could have failed to have been moved.
There is something truly shocking to the national psyche when an
historic treasure is destroyed, or appears to have been severely
damaged.
As an island nation, with maritime history part of our very DNA,
historic ships should command an important place in our hearts.
Fortunately, no-one was hurt. As a museum director, responsibility
lies not only to the ship, but also to visitors ...
