AUSTIN, Texas--During the recent South By Southwest Music & Media Conference here, Vic Chesnutt's performance began with a typically quirky message.

After he and his backing trio had plugged in and tuned up, Chesnutt told the crowd, Well, I think it's time for us to rock. I mean, I think it's time for us to folk.''

This comment reflects Chesnutt's sense of humor, his love of wordplay and the category-defying nature of his music. As evidenced on the terrific new album, Silver Lake,'' Chesnutt has a folk singer's love of detailed stories and a rocker's penchant for beefy guitar riffs.
