South West MEP Neil Parish, chairman of the European Parliament's
agriculture committee, has a welcome for the latest incumbent at the
head of Defra - but says there is much that needs to be righted
So Defra now has yet another Secretary of State at the helm; the
third in as many years. Just as David Miliband was beginning to get
to grips with rural affairs - which he admitted he had little
knowledge of - he has been bumped up to the Foreign Office.
And while I wish Hilary Benn well, I would suggest he has little
time to get up to speed on the big issues facing the countryside.
It's a summer of swotting for Mr Benn, I hope. And top of his list
must be the shambles that is the single farm ...
