Former Westland owner finally confirms it would like a stake in giant Airbus plant to north of Bristol

British engineering giant GKN confirmed publicly for the first time yesterday that it wants to go into partnership with Airbus at Filton, Bristol.

It has submitted a proposal to run the manufacturing side of the site and expects a response from Airbus next month, says GKN chief executive Kevin Smith.

The European planemaker, which designs all its wings and makes parts for them in Filton, wants to switch assembly work to a new owner by the end of this year.
