It failed to become one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and
last month suffered further humiliation by topping a table of
Britain's most disappointing tourist attractions.
But Stonehenge still occupies a unique place in the nation's heart
after landing the coveted accolade of Britain's Best Historic Site in
a TV poll which generated more than 600,000 votes.
The time-ravaged, 4,500-year-old monument on Salisbury Plain
scooped the award in style after attracting twice as many votes as
the runner-up - Nelson's stately flagship HMS Victory.
Presented by Alan Titchmarsh on the UKTV History channel, the
competition took place over six months and saw the public nominate
