WASHINGTON--After humbling Big Tobacco, lawyers are zeroing in on
Big Food, warning the food industry to start telling consumers about
fats and sugars in fast-food products, or there will be punishing
lawsuits.
The industry says labeling for restaurant food isn't feasible
because families dining out add or subtract items in their servings.
Steven Anderson, president of the National Restaurant Association,
said providing consumers labeling information on a 10-ingredient meal
would require the in- dustry to compile millions of labels to cover
all possible combinations.
"It's not practical," he said, adding that surveys find 70 percent
of consumers customize their orders when they eat out.
