A sergeant and a clerk working at the Cook County jail are facing disciplinary charges after a murder suspect was turned over to immigration officials who gave him a bus ticket back to Mexico, sheriff's officials said Friday.

The sergeant, an 18-year veteran, and a female clerical worker for the sheriff's office at the jail for 10 years, are being blamed for letting Juan Alvarez leave jail on March 15.

Officials are recommending that the sergeant, whose job was to oversee the clerk, get a five-day unpaid suspension and the clerk a three-day unpaid suspension, said Bill Cunningham, a sheriff's spokesman.

Alvarez still is being sought but is believed to be in Mexico. He was facing the death ...
