BENTON HARBOR, Mich.--Hundreds of police officers--many of them in riot gear, armed with semi-automatic weapons and tear-gas launchers-- took to the streets of this city Wednesday to try to keep the peace after two nights of riots sparked by the death of a motorcyclist in a crash while being chased by police.

"Let's don't destroy our city," City Commissioner Steve McCoy said, pleading for calm. "This is our city. When it's all said and done, it's going to take us to put it all together again."
