It turned into Hawaii Bowl heartbreak.

East Carolina kicked a field goal on the last play of the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl late Sunday night at Aloha Stadium to stun No. 24 Boise State, 41-38 - moments after the Broncos tied the score on their first defensive touchdown of the year.

The Broncos, who scored on a hook-and-lateral to force overtime last season in the Fiesta Bowl, gave up a 36-yard pass on third down that allowed the Pirates to try the game-winning field goal.

Shaky kicker Ben Hartman, who nearly lost his job this month, drilled the 34-yarder despite a low snap that hit the turf.
