It's an all-too-familiar and sobering reality: Mom and Dad both
work for years, squirreling away money for their child's college
education. But when the time comes, they still have to tap
retirement savings and borrow against the home equity.
That's why Harvard University's plan to increase student
financial aid dramatically, announced recently, was a welcome move.
It helps open up access to higher education and alleviate the
squeeze on middle-class families from soaring college costs. Other
private colleges, especially those with large endowments like
Stanford University and Ivy League schools, should take strong steps
in a similar direction, even if they can't go as far as super-
wealthy ...
