Disturbances plagued Mexican Independence Day celebrations Sunday
in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, leading to the arrests of
dozens of people.
Observances of the Sept. 16 holiday began at noon with a parade
along 26th Street and lasted through the afternoon and evening.
Political dignitaries, including Gov. Blagojevich and Democratic
senatorial candidate Gery Chico, marched in the colorful procession
amid cheers of "Viva Mexico."
But, while the crowds lining 26th Street during the parade were
mostly orderly, a number of suspected gang members created problems
for police trying to keep the peace in the bustling West Side
neighborhood.
By evening, more than 50 people had been arrested ...
