Article: San Bernardino: A city of many faces

Members of the San Bernardino Historical and Pioneer Society do not live in the past. They sure do like to visit now and then, though.

And why not? The past is an interesting place. Especially in San Bernardino.

The city started as a pious Mormon settlement, then turned into a roaring Wild West town. Then it was a resort town, with fancy hotels and spas.

It was a boomtown, a railroad town, a citrus town, an Air Force town.

In 1977 it was honored as an All-American City by the National Civic League.

But then it fell on hard times. It became a poor town. A blighted town. A murder capital. A gang town.

But now it's a city on the rise again. In fact, it looks like San Bernardino is ...
