Asked by BBC4 to write and present a film that answered the question 'Pop, what is it good for?', I avoided simply responding 'absolutely nothing', or, indeed, 'absolutely everything', and got on with talking about some of my favourite pop songs. I could have instantly chosen hundreds that I have a particular fondness, even a raging affection, for.
