Article: Missouri Supreme Court judge appointed; selection process criticized

A storm brewed in Missouri for much of the summer as politicians and interest groups criticized the Appellate Judicial Commission over how the commission chose its nominees to fill a vacancy on the Missouri Supreme Court.

After close to 12 years on the Supreme Court, Judge Ronnie White retired at the beginning of July in part because he didn't want to be portrayed as the poster child for judicial activism. He's been practicing law ever since as a partner at the St. Louis law firm of Holloran, White & Schwartz. At the end of July, the commission announced its finalists for White's seat: appellate judges Nannette Baker, Patricia Breckenridge and Ronald Holliger.
