GREAT LAKES
States must act to protect water
Regarding the Jan. 3 editorial "Make it a priority," we don't yet
know if the drop in water levels of the Great Lakes will be
contained at historical lows or not. No one is certain of the
intentions of the thirsty areas of the country suffering from the
effects of "The Big Dry."
Presidential candidate and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson's
discussion of the future potential of water diversion to New Mexico
should be recognized as a wake-up call for the Great Lakes states to
shake off their slumber and move much more quickly to protect what
will most likely turn out to be one of the greatest resources of all
time on our planet: fresh water.
