Robin Yount once told me there were few, if any, relief pitchers
he feared facing more than Rich "Goose" Gossage.
"He's certainly a Hall of Famer as far as I'm concerned," Yount
said.
As a member of that august group in Cooperstown, Yount certainly
should know a Hall of Fame player when he sees one. Yet, for reasons
that puzzle many, Gossage failed in eight previous attempts to be
elected.
With a modest group of 11 first-time eligibles on the ballot this
year, Gossage has his best chance yet to make the Hall of Fame when
results are announced Tuesday. He came tantalizingly close to
getting the requisite 75% of the vote from the Baseball Writers
