Robin Yount once told me there were few, if any, relief pitchers he feared facing more than Rich "Goose" Gossage.

"He's certainly a Hall of Famer as far as I'm concerned," Yount said.

As a member of that august group in Cooperstown, Yount certainly should know a Hall of Fame player when he sees one. Yet, for reasons that puzzle many, Gossage failed in eight previous attempts to be elected.
