Article: West River residents request preferred developer status for Route 34 project

Leaders in the West River neighborhood are requesting a preferred developer status in the city's plan to reclaim the Route 34 corridor.

The West River Neighborhood Association has been developing a revitalization plan since the mid-1980s, and in the last 20 years has had its hand in refurbished housing, creation of an investment club, improvements to West River Memorial Park and renovations to Barnard Elementary School.

The group also secured a Neighborhood Revitalization Zone designation from the state and Board of Aldermen, and most recently formed a partnership with the University of New Haven to foster homegrown entrepreneurship.
